The Center for Great Apes, in Wauchula, FL, about 45 minutes from Orlando, is a beacon of hope and sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees. Founded in 1993 by Patti Ragan, the Center provides a permanent home for great apes rescued or retired from the entertainment industry, scientific research, or from the cramped cages of people who think these magnificent creatures should be family pets family pets.
People often confuse moneys and apes. When they think of apes, they conjure up images of King Kong. Actually, there are four types of great apes: Gorillas (from Africa), Bonobos (Africa), Orangutans (SE Asia), and Chimpanzees (Africa).
The Center for Great Apes is home to approximately 70 orangutans and chimpanzees, each with their own unique story of survival and resilience. It spans 100 acres of lush, tropical forest, offering a natural and enriching environment for their primate residents.
The apes live in spacious, three-story-high domed enclosures equipped with climbing structures, swinging vines, and a variety of toys and enrichment devices. The habitats mimic apes’ natural surroundings, providing ample opportunities for physical activity and mental stimulation.
One of the standout features of the Center for Great Apes is its elevated tunnel system that allows the apes to explore the sanctuary freely. This unique system gives apes the liberty to roam through the woods and interact with other groups of apes. The sanctuary has specialized habitats for handicapped and geriatric apes, ensuring that all residents receive the care, attention, and compassion they need.
The Center for Great Apes does not receive federal or state funding. They rely solely on donations from generous supporters, but even if you only have a few spare dollars, consider sending what you can. It’s a meaningful way to make a difference in the lives of these endangered species.
If you live near the Center, become a Volunteer. It’s the experience of a lifetime you’ll never forget,
And if you’re young and interested in the environment, check out Reclaim Planet Earth’spartnership with Jack Dalton, the Kid Conservationist. Jack’s only 14 and has been passionate about orangutans since he was eight. He’ll visit the Center for Great Apes in March to learn more and educate others.
Even if you can’t visit, it’s fun just to check out the Center’s website to meet the residents. Like Bam Bam. He loves checking out new toys and hangs out in the woods in the aerial trailway tunnels. And Allie. She’s very social. She fell in love with Louie and the two have been inseparable since they first met in 2012.
Then there’s Bubbles. She doesn’t like to be photographed. That’s surprising since she was donated to the sanctuary by Michael Jackson who was never shy once he donned his signature shades.
Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness, every effort counts. The sanctuary’s website offers various ways to get involved, from adopting an ape to purchasing items from their online store.
In a world where great apes face numerous threats, the Center for Great Apes is a testament to the power of compassion and the importance of providing a haven for these remarkable creatures. By supporting their mission, you can help ensure a brighter future for orangutans and chimpanzees.
